About the taekwondo in a nut shell,

    Taekwondo is Korean traditional martial arts, which teaches more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spirit and life through training our body and mind. Today, it has gradually become a widely common sport that has an international reputation, and takes part in the official games in the Olympics.

     The meaning of the word "Taekwondo"; It is composed of three parts as shown in the following English words. "Tae" means "foot," "leg,"; "Kwon" means "fist," or "fight"; and "Do" means the "way". By putting these three parts together, we might say that "Taekwondo" is the way of the foot and fist.

    Additionally , According to the Korean language, Tae Kwon is a way to control or calm down fights and keep the peace. This concept comes from the meaning of Tae Kwon "to put fists under control". Thus philosophically Taekwondo means "using all parts of the body to stop fighting".  

    Taekwondo has originates from a 5000-year history of Korea, being called by several different names along the way. In Korea, Taekwondo began as a defensive martial art called "Subak" or "Taekyon," and developed as a way of training body and spirit in the ancient kingdom of Koguryo, but this time under the name of "Sunbae."

   Today the Taekwondo has an amazing resemblance to the martial arts in other Oriental countries, because in the course of its evolution it has assimilated many different styles that existed in many different martial arts of the countries surrounding Korea, like Japan and China.

  Nevertheless Taekwondo is very different from many such oriental martial arts. First, physically it is very dynamic with many active movements that include countless foot skills. Second, the taekwondo is constantly evolving and keeps aiming higher in search for a faster stronger, and more challenging martial arts techniques.

  While doing Taekwondo, one should make his mind peaceful and synchronize his mind with his movements. By doing so one might extend this harmony to his life and society. This principle of physical movements, the basic principle of mind training, and the principle of life becomes one and the same.

  The Taekwondo pursues harmonious growth and improvements of life through its unique activities. This is why one could say Taekwondo is a life style. To ultimately enable ourselves lead more complete lives, we would do well by finding the secrets deeply hidden in this martial art.
